Imagex also known as Wimlib, is a small application that lets you manage Windows Imaging files. The program includes the Winlib API and C library that lets you read, write and extract WIM files. It also packs the Imagex application, a command line tool for managing WIM files.

This softeare package was created a an alternative to Microsoft’s WIMGAPI, ImageX and DISM, in order to handle WIM archives and offer compatibility with a number of compression formats like LZMS, LZX and XPRESS.

You an perform several operations with WIM files via the command line tool. If you run it without parameters, a list of all available commands along with their syntax will be displayed. Users can quickl capture, export, extract, delete, optimize, split and join WIM archives, ESD files included. As a result, Imagex allows you to work with WIM files without actually mounting them.

You can append WIM files and receive information related to input files, verify their integrity and other actions. Furthermore, you can rebuild and update archives, and recompress them using higher compression rates, which will result in smaller archives and more free storage space.
